The Most Interesting Ways to Maintain Your Silver Rings

It is not uncommon to find a love for jewelry in women. It is just as common to come across a few or atleast one silver ring, among the many collections of a jewelry lover. The reasons that make silver jewelry so popular are many. To begin with, it is versatile and can be worn with any colored garment without looking odd. It is also sturdy and durable, making silver rings capable enough of surviving any hard knocks that your hands might face. Silver has good reflectivity as well as neutrality and serves ideally for layering with any accessory. Accessories like silver rings are not only available in innumerable styles and shapes but are also apt for all occasions be it formal or casual.

Now since silver jewelry especially rings are so commonly used, they also tend to get tarnished easily. Here are some tips on how to effectively maintain the luster and charm of your silver rings:

Prevention tips:

Since pure silver is too soft to be molded into rings and retain its shape, it gets mixed with some impurity generally other metals like copper in a definitive percentage. On being exposed to air or moisture, the metals react with the sulfur present in the air and end up tarnished. This is why to prevent your silver rings you must:

  • Remove you silver rings before getting into the bath tub or shower.
  • Take care not to expose your silver ring to acidic content or even the chemicals in perfumes, hair sprays or other makeup articles.
  • Clean it dry with a soft cotton cloth or mop to remove any moisture or perspiration from its surface, after use.
  • Store it in a dry and airtight jewelry box or Ziploc bag or container so that no air can get in.
  • Attach an anti-tarnish strip in the box or container where you store your silver ring to remove tarnishing elements.

Cleaning tips:

Cleaning is an important part of the whole maintenance of silver rings regime. And you do not need to worry as you can do it at home too. Here are a few ways how:

Toothpaste:

Yes, the toothpaste that cleans you teeth can clean up your silver ring pretty well too. Withdraw a little of it on a toothbrush and brush your ring gently. Wash the ring once clean.

Detergent:

You can either use a few drops of liquid detergent or make a paste of the detergent powder and water. Now dip a soft cloth in the liquid or paste and rub the ring carefully. Finally clean it with water.

Hand-sanitizer:

Take a few drops of the liquid sanitizer and apply it on the ring. Next rub it with a soft piece of cloth and finally wash it with water.

Aluminum foil:

Fill a jar with hot water and add a tablespoon of salt to it. Next cut and dip a few strips of aluminum foil in the jar. Dip the ring in the jar and leave it for some time. The salt along with the foil will extract all the tarnish that is layered upon your silver ring.

Ketchup:

Believe it or not but allowing your silver ring s to sit for 15-20 minutes with some ketchup on might actually make them clean and shiny. For better results you can use a gentle brush to rub it clean.

Other things to note:

  • You must not use any acidic cleaner for your silver rings as it may corrode them.
  • Be gentle when using a brush to clean up the rings and only use a soft brush. You might otherwise add scratches to the accessory.
  • Wash the rings well with water once you are done cleaning them so that no residue is left behind.
  • Wipe and dry the rings with a clean soft cloth after washing.
  • Do not opt for silver cleaner dip solution for silver rings with organic gemstones.
